Our College-based Curriculum

Many essential mandatory and ministry-directed elective courses required for most diploma and degree courses at the College are coordinated through our school and delivered by our faculty.

WRIT: Reason and writing curriculum

WRIT is designed to help students succeed in becoming functional, competent communicators at work, at school, and in life. Our faculty introduces students to essential reading, writing, and reasoning principles at the post-secondary level.

COMM: Communications curriculum

At Fanshawe, the importance of professional and work-related communication is reinforced by including at least one COMM course in most programs in addition to WRIT. For questions about a specific COMM course, please get in touch with our school directly via the Contacts page.

GenEd: General education electives

Our elective courses provide students with learning opportunities that broaden their knowledge about the world beyond their vocational programs through a roster of unique and multidisciplinary courses.

Our Office: An Overview

The School of Language and Liberal Studies is located in A2058. We share this space with the English Language Institute, one of our sister schools.

Office Hours

Regular hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. Any exceptions to these hours will be posted and announced through email. You can find information about setting up your access card to the office on the Employee ID Card and Office Access page.

Absences and Class Cancellations

If you need to be absent, call front reception at 519-452-4442 before 8:00 A.M. to notify them that you will not be in and explain why. Front Line Staff will post a cancellation notice on your class doors. Please also inform your class by email and FOL announcement.

Office Supplies

Photocopier/printer paper is available in the mailroom. All other office supplies are in the cabinet behind the reception desk. If you find that supplies are running low, or if you take the last item, please let the Front Line staff know.

Work Stations

A map of A2058 indicates the NFT desks, where the Support Staff and Coordinators are located, where the printers are, etc. You will be provided with a shared workstation by the school assistant, or you can use our hoteling stations if you prefer to use your own device.

Lunch Room

The lunchroom is located at the back of A2058. There are fridges, microwaves, chairs, and tables for you to use. Employees are expected to clean up after themselves to ensure a healthy and clean shared eating space. Please only use the fridge to store your lunch for the day.

Photocopying and Printing

There are several faculty printers around the office. The Front Line Support Staff will assign you a photocopy code. Extra paper is available in the mail room. If you have more than 50 impressions (1 page/1 side if double-sided), you must send your document(s) to the Print Shop. (Reprographics (aka, Repro).

Telephones

The phones at the ends of the rows of workstations are for faculty use. The Fanshawe directory lists your extension as 4480 or 4442 (the Front Line). If someone calls for you, the Front Line Staff will transfer the call to the phone closest to your workstation. If no one answers or you cannot answer, they will leave a message in your mailbox.

Please answer the phones if they are ringing – the Front Line Staff rely on the phones being answered to communicate accurate information.

Mailboxes and Email

You will be assigned a mailbox in the mailroom (behind the reception desk). Please check your mailbox frequently for external and inter-office mail, phone messages from the Front Line, and important office correspondence. All faculty have two email accounts. A www.fanshawec.ca/exchange email is used for departmental and professional communication, and a fanshaweonline.ca account is used for student communication.

Front Meeting and Multimedia/eLearning Rooms

Three rooms in the front of the office can be used for meeting with students. Please avoid bringing students into the rear office area to protect student and faculty privacy. These rooms should not be used for grading or testing. Make-up in-class assignments (where applicable) should be done in the College’s Testing Centre (F3011).

These rooms are also equipped with various eLearning authoring tools for your use. Some eLearning technologies can be used at home; speak with your Educational Support Technologist to learn more.

Use the paper sign-up posted on the door to book a room. Please be aware of the volume of interest for these rooms and be courteous to your colleagues.

Note: These rooms are not available for use during high-traffic times. This includes but is not limited to the first 12 days of class and the times around the withdrawal deadline and registration deadlines. The GAP room is reserved for the GAP Coordinator and Academic Advisor only and is never available for booking.

Confidentiality

Provincial legislation in Ontario requires that we take every step to protect the personal and private information of every applicant, student and staff member. This legislation is titled the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA); you will learn more about this legislation in your mandatory Health & Safety course. Due to the complex nature of confidentiality, you are strongly advised to consult with an academic manager before disclosing any student information. In general, College employees should not disclose ANY student information to non-college employees under any circumstances.

For example, a student’s parents are not entitled to any information about any aspect of a student’s registration, status, or performance at the College unless the student has provided a signed “Freedom of Information Waiver” form. Without such a waiver, faculty should not even confirm that a particular individual is registered at the College.

Similarly, student information (names, student numbers, grades, and other personal information) should be treated carefully. Paper documents containing identifiable student information should not be discarded into regular wastepaper baskets – they should always be placed in the confidential shred bins (see below).

Disposal of Confidential Materials

Paper documents containing ANY identifiable student information should not be discarded into regular wastepaper baskets – they should be placed in the confidential shred bins (located throughout the office).

Unclaimed Student Work

Any student work that is unclaimed or not handed back at the end of a semester is kept for a full calendar year. Place the work in a storage box and label it with the date it can be shredded and your last name.

  • Example: Smith, Shred January 2024

Place the box neatly outside the storage room unless instructed otherwise.

Facilities

For general facilities issues (heating/cooling/air quality problems/leaks/other problems), contact the Control Center at 452-4400. You will need to provide a specific location and request a solution. Notify your supervisor (or designate) when making a call.
