B-1: Separable Verbs

As you certainly noticed in the previous stories, many German verbs have another part that belongs to them, but is usually found at the end of the sentence.

Wolfgang schaltet den Roboter ein.

Hören Sie zu! 

These parts are called separable prefixes. We have them in English too, but the second part of the verb usually stays closer to the verb:

I will drop you off at the airport tomorrow.

In German, however, the separable part usually goes all the way to the end regardless of how many words are between them and the verb:

Wolfgang schaltet den Roboter am Montagmorgen um 9 Uhr in seinem Zimmer ein.

Also, although separable prefixes are in front of the verb in the infinitive (einschalten = to turn on; aufstehen = to get up), the imperative with them works just like in English:

schalten Sie … ein! = turn .. on!

Stehen Sie auf! = get up!

Aufgabe 1. Fill in the blanks with the appropriate parts of the given verbs. Do not forget to conjugate accordingly!

anrufen (to call up) __________ du deine Eltern  _____ ?  Ich vermisse meine schmerzlich.

 Aufgabe 3. Separable or inseparable?  Decide whether each verb listed below is separable or not. Keep in mind, this is an advanced exercise! As a rule of thumb, prefixes zer-, be-, er-, miss-, emp-, ver-, ge-, ent- are always inseparable.
