A: Easy verbs and the superpower of the present tense

All verbs (actions) except for about a dozen special ones* (sein, haben, werden, six modals + würde, wäre, hätte, möchte) get the following endings in present:

ich -e              wir -en

du – st             ihr -t

er/sie/es -t      sie/Sie -en

This pattern is very easy to memorize if you read the highlighted parts in English: iche dust ten ten.

Sehr wichtig! It is extremely important to memorize this pattern!

Therefore, you would say:

• Ich studiere Deutsch. (I am studying German.)
• Du trinkst Tee. (You are drinking tea.)
• Er geht nach Hause. (He is going home.)
• Wir wohnen in Hamilton. (We live in Hamilton.)
• Ihr kommt aus Kanada. (You all come from Canada.)
• Sie essen Bratwurst. (They/You* are eating bratwurst.)

*sie meaning ‘they’ and Sie meaning ‘You’ are often indistinguishable when sie is the first word in a sentence. In these cases, it is the context that tell them apart.

Sehr wichtig! (very ‘weighty’ = important)

The iche dust ten ten pattern you just learned is super important because this one pattern is used in German to express four different things in English! 

Thus, ‘ich lerne’ could mean: 

1. “I learn” 
2. “I am learning”
3. “I do learn”
4.  “I will learn”. 

That’s four different English constructions in a single German one!
