What else do you need to know about German numbers?

The word for number one (‘eins’) loses the ‘s’ in compounds, i.e. words that consist of multiple words, e.g. dreiundzwanzig is a compound whereas individually drei and zwanzig are not.

1,3 = eins Komma drei (see the -s? it’s there because it is not a compound)

21 = einundzwanzig (no -s because it is not a compound)

• Unlike in English, in German comma is used to indicate decimals instead of a period:

1,5 = eins Komma fünf

• Also, when talking about prices, the symbol of the currency is placed after the actual price but is pronounced instead of the word ‘Komma’. Please note that currencies do not have plural forms in German

3,80 € = drei Euro achtzig.

$10.99 = zehn Dollar neunundneunzig

• In informal speech, the currency name is often dropped:

3,80 € = drei achtzig

• Units of measurements behave in the same way:

                        2,7 m = zwei Meter siebzig

• The percentages are in the same way:

                        1,4% = eins Komma vier Prozent
