36 VERB-KICKERS

VERB-KICKERS

You might have noticed that some words, such as weil, dass, als, damit move the verb to the end of the sentence:

  • Normal sentence:  Rita hat auf ihn getreten.  (Rita has stepped on it).
  • Same sentence with denn: Sein Schuh glänzt nicht mehr, denn Rita hat auf ihn getreten. (His shoe shines no more because Rita has stepped on it.)
  • Same sentence with weil: Sein Schuh glänzt nicht mehr, weil Rita auf ihn getreten hat. (His shoe shines no more because Rita has stepped on it.)
  • Normal sentence: Ein Schuh lag auf dem Boden. (A shoe lay on the floor.)
  • With dass: Sie hat nicht gesehen, dass ein Schuh auf dem Fußboden lag. (Sie did not see that a shoe lay on the floor.)

We are going to call such words verb-kickers, however, the proper name is sub-ordinating conjunctions.

It does look like they are there just to make our lives more difficult, but don’t worry, you will get used to them.
