Advanced Greetings & Farewells

Note: we will cover this section closer to the second half of the course.

At this point, you should already know the three most common ways to say ‘bye’ in German:

• Auf Wiedersehen! (formal, in person)
• Tschüß! (informal, in person)
• Auf Wiederhören! (on the phone)

However, there are a few other ways to bis farewell that you must know, especially this one:

bis + any moment in time =  until + any moment in time:

• bis morgen! = see you tomorrow!
• bis später! = see you later!
• bis gleich! = see you very soon!
• bis nachher! = see you afterward!
• bis bald! = see you soon!
• bis Montag! (or any other weekday) = see you on Monday! (or any other weekday)

Finally, here are a couple more farewells you are likely to hear. These ones are mostly informal.

• Ciao! = Bye!
• Alles Gute = All the best!
• Man sieht sich! = See you around!
• Viel Glück = Good luck!
• Mach’s gut = Take care!
