Mistakes 99% of learners initially make (keep referring back to this section!)

1. Unlike in English, the word for I (‘ich’) ist not capitalized unless a sentence begins with it:
   

•  Am Montag kaufe ich mir einen neuen Laptop.
  

2. All nouns are capitalized:

• Am Montag kaufe ich mir einen Laptop, eine Katze und ein Hotdog.

3. The first element of a sentence is NOT separated with a comma even when it is in English: 

•    Am Montag kaufe ich mir einen Laptop.

4. The present tense, e.g. ‘ich gehe’ means both ’I go’ and ‘I am going’. A word-for-word translation “ich bin gehen” does not work in German!     

• ich kaufe = ‘I buy’ AND ‘I am buying’
• du feierst = ‘you celebrate’ AND ‘you are celebrating’
• sie sagt = ‘she says’ AND ‘she is saying’
  

5. The V2 rule: the ‘main’ verb (the one with a personal ending) goes into position 2 in a sentence. The subject (the doer of the action) and the object (what/who is affected by the action) can switch places:

• Am Montag kaufe ich mir einen Laptop.
• Einen Laptop kaufe ich mir am Montag.
  

6. There is always a comma BEFORE ‘aber’, ‘denn’, and all verb-kickers: weil, dass, damit, wenn, wann, als etc.:

• Ich bin froh, denn ich kann ein bisschen Deutsch!
• Ich kaufe mir einen neuen Laptop, weil mein Laptop 6 Jahre alt ist.
  

7. Infinitives & past participles always go to the end:

• Ich möchte mir einen neuen Laptop kaufen. (infinitive)
• Ich habe mir einen neuen Laptop gekauft. (past participle).
