Beyond the Field
Transformational Change
We hope that this course has prompted and inspired you to look at your place within the natural environment and as a person of influence as a potential environmental leader.
Circling back to the four aspects of Environmental Leadership, we hope that this course has provided you with the basis for moving onward with…
Conservation/Community Science
This can be done simply with basic equipment and embedded into your daily guiding/educating practice. Embed scientific data collection into each trip. This empowers your participants and adds value to your offering.
Major citizen-science initiatives include eBird, INaturalist Bioblitz, and Living Lake Canada’s National Lake Blitz.
Outdoor Learning, Including Environmental Education and Place Based Learning
Deepening and sharing your knowledge, including honouring Indigenous knowledge of a place is important. You are a valuable resource for inspiring change, and your relationship to place is key to enacting change and inspiring others to do the same.
Community Engagement and Justice
Community connections are everything. Reach out to local community groups, nonprofits, and First Nations to collaborate on environmental work. We are all part of this environment and can share in the load of care.
Sustainable Practices for the Field and Beyond
Continue learning; embed the knowledge into your daily life and choices. Feeling guilty every time we can’t be perfect environmentalists isn’t sustainable. The path toward a safer climate doesn’t need you or Earth’s consumers to get every action right, but it does need us to understand the scope of our actions within the greater crisis and take action wherever we can, without judgement of those for whom this isn’t accessible.
Environmental Leadership Checklist
To send you out on your journey as an environmental leader, we’ve curated a handy checklist for you to print before your next trip. We hope to see you out there modelling sustainability and continuing your ongoing work to become an environmental leader.
