This chapter, Writing Informal Reports, is intended to provide a description and details of various informal report types.

Here are the key takeaways from the chapter:

  • Proposals are used to communicate proposed plans and ideas. (5.1)
  • There are a number of different types of proposals, but the format of a proposal will typically include the following: introduction/background; details and description; qualifications, budget and timelines (when/if applicable); conclusion, and references. (5.1)
  • Incident and inspection reports are used to communicate about routine workplace situations. An incident report is used to communicate about situations such as a workplace accident, illness, injury, and work stoppage. An inspection report is used to communicate about a workplace inspection.  In both types of reports, neutral, unbiased communication is critical. (5.2)

  • A progress report is used to communicate about the progress of a project. They can use various formats and be varying lengths, depending on the nature and status of the project. (5.4)
  • The purpose of a lab report is to detail and capture the various aspects of an experiment. (5.5)
