Cultivating Lifelong Learners and Global Citizens

School Gardening and Healthy Food Access

STAR School is a pre-K to Grade 8 school in Leupp, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation, with limited access to fresh produce. Alberta Nells, an art and service learning educator for grades 3 to 8, initiated a school garden to increase access to nourishing food year-round, as well as learner agency. Hannah and Nariah, students at STAR, began the garden alongside Alberta Nells and have worked to expand its offerings and access. Beyond learning about how to successfully grow food, the school garden supplies food to the local community and has inspired other families to begin their own gardens at home. Habitat for Humanity Partnership

A team of learners from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Windsor has partnered with Habitat for Humanity Windsor-Essex to build Canada’s first residential 3D printed homes. Dr. Sreekanta Das, Civil Engineering professor and project lead, brought together a group of graduate students and laboratory technicians to tackle affordable housing and environmentally sustainable options for community members. Leadership Through Service

The University of Central Florida offers a course called Leadership Through Service: An Advanced Leadership Experience. The purpose of the course is to explore social change and the real-world impact learners can have. The capstone project is to develop a “Change Project” where learners plan for social change. Learners explore what role leadership plays in enacting social change, what their community service and civic responsibilities are, and the necessary skills and competencies for change. Learners are assessed on their competencies related to leadership skills. Check out the Leadership Through Service course syllabus to learn more.
