STEAM and Changemaking

Anyis’ sixth grade teacher, Ms. Eugenio, encouraged her to get involved in robotics after noticing her passion for building. Following Ms. Eugenio’s advice, Anyis joined a girls-only robotics club where she built capacity for empathy, teamwork, and leadership. In Grade 8, Anyis hosted a STEAM event focused on encouraging other girls to engage with science, technology, and robotics. Together, this group of girls shifted others’ mindsets about girls in STEAM, as well as their sense of agency to impact real social change. Coding-Based Programming

Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB) partnered with Pinnguaq Association to provide learners from Grade 7 to 12 with an opportunity to learn coding. Participants engaged in interactive workshops learning how to create or edit games, animations, and interactive projects using Scratch and MakeCode Arcade. Educators connected the workshops with math and science learning outcomes, while simultaneously enhancing their own skills and confidence to continue learning and teaching coding. Remote Communities Drone Transport Initiative

The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Medicine launched a Remote Communities Drone Transport Initiative examining how drone technology can improve access to healthcare supplies in rural and remote Indigenous communities. During the pilot, drones carried prototype packages to first determine efficacy rates, followed by laboratory samples, medical supplies, and medications. The project also partnered with a local school in Stellat’en First Nation to name the project and design logos for the launch sites.
