Introduction:
This chapter covers few case studies in troubleshooting the biomedical devices by localizing technical problems to the board level. These case studies are offered to introduce the required troubleshooting steps on medical equipment.
As previously discussed, board level repair and troubleshooting is preferred compare to the component replacement.
Please be aware, individual component replacement should not be attempted outside of medical device manufacturer’s authority. Component level repair is extremely difficult due to the extensive use of surface mount technology and the high parts-density on the circuit boards. Unauthorized component replacement can impair defibrillator performance.
Before troubleshooting medical devices, make sure that the failure is not the result of improper use. Result of performance test or preventive maintenance may lead a medical device to the troubleshooting and repair if you have been assigned to troubleshooting/repair a medical device, first verify the failure.
The following are the examples of board level repair or troubleshooting by following the manufacturer’s recommendation using service manuals.
