2.1 – Introduction

I hope at this point in your career you understand that electricity can be dangerous to the human body. In the upcoming chapter, we are going to review why electricity is dangerous by discussing its effects on the human body. We will also identify how to avoid the dangers of electricity on the job site for yourself, patients, staff and anyone else in the area by discussing electrical hazards that can be caused by biomedical equipment. In addition, we will teach you about understanding schematics and equipment that can keep everyone safer on the job site.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Understand the effects of electricity on the body.
  2. Identify electrical hazards caused by medical equipment.
  3. Understand how to protect patients, operators and the public from electrocution due to medical equipment.
  4. Summarize the common components found on electrical schematic diagrams
