About Turnitin

Turnitin is an online plagiarism detection and prevention tool that helps students, instructors, and universities maintain academic integrity. It uses sophisticated algorithms to detect and compare submitted documents against a comprehensive database of webpages, journals, books, and other sources. The tool can be used by universities to ensure that the work of their students is original and free from any form of plagiarism.

How Turnitin is Used

Your course(s) may utilize an integrated Turnitin.com service to promote academic integrity and deter plagiarism. Students are expected to submit their work directly within the Avenue to Learn, where it is checked against the internet, published works and Turnitin’s database for similar or identical work. If Turnitin finds similar or identical work that has not been properly cited, a report is sent to the instructor showing the student’s work and the original source. The instructor reviews what Turnitin has found and then determines if they think there is a problem with the work.
