Value Statements
Compassion and Empathy
Since nurses foster an atmosphere where patients feel taken care of and understood, compassion and empathy are essential to nursing and can have a positive effect on recovery and general well-being. By promptly, attentively, and consolingly attending to patients’ needs, nurses demonstrate compassion. Research indicates that better results and increased patient satisfaction are associated with empathic care (Sinclair et al., 2017).
Respect for Patient Dignity and Autonomy
Respecting patients’ autonomy and dignity entails allowing them to make decisions regarding their own treatment. It also entails upholding patient privacy, offering care that is sensitive to cultural differences, and standing up for their wishes. Even if a patient’s choices conflict with their own, nurses must respect those choices (Aiken et al., 2018).
Commitment to Professionalism and Accountability
High standards of professionalism, such as taking responsibility for one’s actions, engaging in ongoing self-reflection, and committing to lifelong learning, are necessary for nurses. Professional accountability guarantees that nurses adhere to nursing standards and best practices (LeDuc & Kotzer, 2009).
Integrity and Ethical Practice
Vulnerable populations’ health and welfare are entrusted to nurses. In order to maintain this trust, nurses must act with moral rectitude and honesty, making sure that patients and coworkers are treated fairly, and that documentation is honest.
Commitment to Excellence and Quality of Care
By staying current with evidence-based practices and enhancing the quality of care, nurses aim for excellence. In order to deliver safe, efficient, and superior care, this commitment entails implementing innovations and best practices (Melnyk et al., 2014).
