34 How to Talk with Your Supervisor about Contract Extension

How to Talk with Your Supervisor about Contract Extension

In April, you will need to open conversations with your director supervisor regarding extending your contract for the next year. Talking to your supervisor about your contract extension might feel intimidating. Here is some advice to help you have a productive conversation.

Steps

1) Schedule the meeting

The first step is to request a meeting with your direct supervisor.  It is always a good idea to include a meeting agenda with your request.

Here is an meeting agenda example:

  • Review Learning Goals
  • Upcoming Performance Review
  • Contact extensions and plans for September 2024–August 2025.

2) Prepare for the meeting

Reflect on your achievements and prepare a list of specific accomplishments, projects completed, or skills acquired that showcase your dedication and effectiveness. This could also include any additional certifications (eg. LinkedIn Learning) you have achieved. The evidence you prepare will reinforce your case for an extension.

3) During the meeting

  • Start the meeting by thanking your supervisor for the opportunity to learn and grow with the company and their mentorship.
  • Prepare to share what you are proud of and what you have learned on the job. You can also focus on how excited you are to continue working with the team / company and include any future goals you have.
  • Highlight your achievements and contributions during your time in the position using the information you gathered in preparation for the meeting.
  • Clearly communicate your interest in continuing your involvement with the organization or project.
  • Discuss your future goals and how they align with the objectives of the position or the company. Express your willingness to invest further in your role and contribute to future successes.
