To the memory of real-life people and their moments in history, however tragic or joyous.
Students in the creative writing course, The Writer’s World, at Fanshawe College engage in a SILEx project (Signature, Innovative, Learning Experiences). Each student researches a moment, event, or place in London, Ontario, and develops a fiction short story inspired by their research. Their stories are not fact-dependent but are original interpretations of emotional connections between characters and events. The writing students focus on the core of the human experience – how strong or weak that core is to support the passage of time, poignant memories and secrets.
Within These Walls is a collection of debut storytellers. From London’s early years in the 19th century to the mid-20th century, the writing students find rich, historical moments amidst art, natural disasters, friendships, chaos, judicial corruption and love. They find moments of storytelling in raging flood waters, in a river disaster, in courtroom drama, in merciless executions, in paranormal disturbances, on gallery walls, and in moments of scientific victories.
Enjoy this collection’s insightful narratives about moments in London’s history.
