Module 0: Course Introduction, Data Analysis and Lab Report Writing

Learning Objectives

Note: You are not expected master all of the learning objectives below by the end of the skills lab. This list is provided to give you a sense of what you will be learning in this course over the year. You will be given opportunities to practice and improve on these skills during the other lab modules.

By the end of this lab, students should be able to:

  1. Adjust the transmitted light/bright-field on a compound microscope according to KÖHLER  to achieve optimal contrast and resolution
  2. Demonstrate their ability to use a stereomicroscope to view specimens 
  3. Use Zen software to capture images, and investigate how changes in the software settings (e.g. exposure time and histogram) affects the quality of captured images 
  4. Accurately pipette
  5. Use the gravimetric method to measure pipette accuracy and precision
