An Introduction to the GATA Network

What is the GATA Network?

Supported by the University of Windsor’s CTL and the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the GATA Network was launched in 2010 with the goal of facilitating and systematizing peer mentorship, professional skill development, and resource sharing among GA/TAs. Since its inception, the GATA Network continues to be developed by students, for students and provides an environment that flourishes collegial growth, support, and empowerment. Two graduate student coordinators anchor the program on a peer-supported network model, where GA/TAs across campus are mentored in developing, practicing, and honing transferable skills in teaching, leadership, communication, and collaboration.

The GATA Network Development Team works with GA/TAs across campus, offering mentorship and resources to support them in enhancing their pedagogical knowledge and skills. The GATA Network achieves this by offering campus-wide and discipline-specific programming in multiple formats throughout the year particularly aimed at engaging GA/TAs from the moment they arrive on campus through to graduation.

What does the GATA Network Offer GA/TAs?

The GATA Network offers a variety of opportunities and support for current GA/TAs, which includes:

  • Campus-Wide Professional Development Workshops: Offering campus-wide professional development events, Fall GATAcademy and Winter GATAcademy, that include interactive workshops that are led by experienced GA/TAs on topics related to grading and effective feedback, leading effective labs and tutorials, universal design for instruction, and a whole lot more!
  • GATA Network Series workshops: Workshops offered throughout the year as a means of providing networking opportunities and continuous support for students.
  • Individual Consultations: One-on-one consultations with GA/TAs to discuss all things teaching and learning-related.
  • Resources: The Network regularly engages in resource development to support GA/TAs in developing and improving their pedagogical knowledge and practice. Select resources are listed below:
  • Awards: Supporting the promotion of the GATA Awards – a campus-wide award program that aims to recognize exceptional GA/TAs who contribute to a positive, learning-centered environment at the University of Windsor.
