Outcomes and Lessons Learned
While the results of the case study suggest that the UDL framework employed in NURS 1000 yielded overall benefits to students, it is also important to note that each UDL strategy on its own was not necessarily met favourably by students.
Lessons Learned
- Instructors should initially make small modifications to their teaching approach and integrate selected UDL strategies with which they feel most comfortable.
- Set the tone by reaching out to all students needing various accommodations at the beginning of a course and through the syllabus or other means to reinforce available support.
- A balance of appropriate instructional strategies is essential to avoid overloading learners, a common issue experienced with UDL in practice. Having clear details or guidelines is helpful.
- It is essential to remember that while UDL does significantly decrease the need for making individual accommodations, it may not eliminate them completely (Griful-Freixenet et al., 2017).
