Lessons Learned

Each of the six TICPs were represented in this course and linked most specifically to the unfolding case study. The unfolding case study was consistently praised by learners and linked to each TICP principle, as illustrated in Figure 1. The unfolding case study was helpful from our perspective as co-instructors. Returning to the unfolding case study throughout lecture time provided an opportunity to break the content into mini-lectures focused on specific course topics and then apply those to the case study before moving onto the next topic.

However, perception of assignment equivalency is needed. In 2022, learners were given a choice to do one or both of two assignments and take the higher grade. Some learners voiced concerns about the assignment equivalency of completing either the paper or formative review. In 2023, learners were required to complete both assignments and could take the higher grade of the two, and no one voiced concerns about assignment equivalency.

It is also important to avoid excessive content representation without clear guidelines to follow. A few learners, across both course offerings, expressed confusion or feeling overwhelmed by the amount of material available. Although the organization of the material may have contributed to these concerns, strategies to avoid confusion and clarity are needed and may include minimizing some content.
