Learning Activity
Before explaining the redesign project further, let’s test some of the principles of UDL with a fun activity (time of completion varies with experience level and patience). Each phase must be completed in sequential order to complete the final product (see video below).

Reflection
*Click on the questions below and reflect on your own experience with the learning activity.*
This activity was used during the weekly lectures of a first-year undergraduate nursing course class to engage learners with the course concepts, peers, and instructors, which relates to the principle of engagement. When used as a point-allocated activity in class (e.g. students handed in an image of the completed project), it offered a means to obtain a point, and links to the UDL principle of multiple means of action and expression of content understanding. Thus, all three UDL principles could be integrated into one activity. Practice is also essential. As a co-instructor, I can create the bird without instructions now as I complete this activity each year with students. However, if, for example, I was tired because I had to attend to an ill family member the night prior, I might have a more difficult time learning the skill.
Acknowledgement
Acknowledgement to Dr. Jane Tyerman for developing this brilliant “flapping bird” activity, which was adapted for use in this UDL example.
