3M Sessions in the Future
Moving forward, we are working to better understand the impact of the 3M sessions on undergraduate student wellbeing and academic success and broaden the scope of these sessions. Specifically, we will focus on
- better understanding first-year undergraduate students’ self-regulated learning behaviours (i.e., meta-cognition, motivation, and learning strategies), and determining if students modify these behaviours following holistic in-class sessions.
- better understanding first-year undergraduate students’ academic success and academic burnout post-pandemic and determining if students use knowledge from holistic in-class sessions to modify academic outcomes.
- better understanding first-year undergraduate students’ mental well-being, social connection, and resilience post-pandemic, and determining if students use knowledge from holistic in-class sessions to change psychosocial wellness. We will implement pre- and post- 3M session questionnaires to better assess their impact on student well-being.
To facilitate sharing the holistic in-class sessions with students and other instructors, we will work with eLearning Designers at the Trent Teaching Commons to create the sessions as an Open Education Resource (OER; Pressbooks). The creation of the OER will allow us to integrate the program across Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard and to offer the 3M sessions to many first-year undergraduate students in multiple courses seamlessly and simultaneously.
Overall, we are encouraged by the student feedback and final grades following the 3M sessions which provide support that these holistic in-person sessions may be beneficial for first-year students as they transition into university.
