Program Learning Resources and Facilities
Labs
Attendance at all Lab classes is mandatory. Massage Therapy students are required to wear the uniform T-shirts while in labs and bring all the necessary linens and supplies to each Lab class. Failure to do so will result in lost clinical and professionalism competencies.
On-site Clinical Placement
Students are expected to be ready to accept their client/patient on time.
Once during a clinic assignment you may switch with another student. The teacher and the clinic clerk must be informed a minimum of five days in advance of such a change. Lateness is not acceptable behaviour at either clinic or outreach. Successful achievement of the described competencies is not compatible with a pattern of poor time management.
Students are expected to be in uniform. Each student will bring the following equipment to the clinic setting:
- 2 pillows with white pillow cases
- 2 blankets
- 1 thermophore
- unscented, hypoallergenic oil, lotion, gel
- a means of keeping track of time
STUDENTS AS CLIENTS
Massage Therapy students, like all Centennial College students, are welcome to book an appointment in student clinic (416) 289-5353. The treatment cost for all Centennial College Students is $10., your cost is $10.(Student i.d. card/timetable required when paying).
Students will be treated as clients in all aspects of assessment and treatment as well the policies that cover all clients in student clinic will be applied to massage therapy student clients.
UNIFORM GUIDELINES
Massage Therapy students are required to wear a Massage Therapy program T-shirt during labs and the selected uniform while in clinic, during outreach and at times identified by the faculty (e.g. during oral practical examinations). Students will wear a black golf shirt with black uniform scrub pants. The shirt will specifically identify the student as a Centennial College Massage Therapy Student and a Visual Identifier will complete the personal identification. Please refer to the Clinic Manual for details on footwear.
Jewellery, Makeup and Personal Hygiene
Jewellery and other personal decorations should not impair the therapist’s ability to provide treatment.
A plain wedding band may be worn but it is recommended that no rings be worn when treating clients.
No perfume, cologne or aftershave is to be worn in the clinic/laboratory/outreach setting as many people have sensitivities/allergies to these products.
Hair longer than collar length must be put up neatly in a braid, ponytail, etc.
You will be working in close proximity of other people. Good grooming and personal hygiene must be attended to at all times.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE MASSAGE CLINIC/LAB
- Personal belongings
Lockers are mandatory and are used to store personal belongings, massage therapy linens & supplies as there is no safe storage area available in the clinical rooms. Massage linens and supplies should be brought to the clinic/lab in a soft sided bag that can be folded and stored under the massage tables. Large suitcases on wheels will not be permitted in the clinic/lab areas as they pose a safety hazard when left on the floor.
- Food and beverages
Food and beverages, other than water, are absolutely not permitted in the clinic/lab areas.
- Cleanliness
The lab and Clinic rooms should be kept clean and tidy at all times, in accordance with the Standards of Practice requirements.
ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRACTICE – Unsupervised Lab Practice
Students will be required to utilize additional time, beyond that which is officially scheduled (‘after hours’), to become skillful therapists.
Room 214 will be made available for groups of students during the week when this lab is not being used for classes or for student clinics. A chart outlining available times will be posted outside the room each semester.
STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITIES RELATED TO ADDITIONAL PRACTICE TIME
1) Individual students wishing to use clinical space ‘after hours’, will be required to report to the College Security Office – Room 234 to sign in.
2) College security will be given a list of students currently enrolled in the Massage Therapy Program.
3) At the security office, presentation of student ID cards will be required.
4) Security will open the designated room.
5) Students are responsible for use of equipment, supplies, furniture. All equipment must be returned and placed in the appropriate places in an orderly manner.
6) The student leaving last is responsible for ensuring that the door to the massage therapy lab is locked.
7) The massage therapy equipment is not to be used for personal or financial gain.
8) In unsupervised practice sessions, students must behave in ways which reflect the professional code of ethics and standards of practice.
9) Students are expected to comply with the same PPE requirements they have for supervised practice
Students unable to meet expectations regarding above responsibilities will forfeit practice privileges.
There may be limited access to Centennial’s computers and specialty labs. For your health and safety, follow any posted protocols (e.g., physical distancing, cleaning, etc.).
Equipment
In semester 1 you will be given a student kit list. Assuming usual wear and tear, this kit should last you during your entire time in our program. While it is optional, the program recommends students purchase a portable massage table to practice outside of school. During semester 1 we will discuss the limits of practicing outside of school.
Software
Students have access to industry-leading software packages and bundles that can be found in rooms, labs, and podiums across our campuses. Computers at each campus will be loaded with the applications for use in your courses. To access these features, you must log in to the network using your student number. You can see a comprehensive list of software and software packages installed by room and by campus here.
As theory classes are scheduled to be held online, it is recommended that all students have a headset/mic.

Library Collections
In semester 1 we will have a class visit from the Librarian to introduce you to the databases you have access to as a Centennial student.
Instructors may make course readings available online through the eReserves service in eCentennial or as physical items that can be borrowed from a campus library on short-term loan. If your instructor is using eReserves, you will see a module in the course content on eCentennial. The list may include links to library resources like databases, articles, and eBooks; book chapters; web links; and open educational resources. Check your course outline or contact your instructor for information about where your assigned course readings are located.
