16 Submitting your syllabus
What’s the process for submitting syllabi? What’s the procedure for adjustments?
Submitting Syllabi: Procedure for ECS Instructors as of 2020-2021
Syllabi are submitted to the department chair by email, and are due August 1st for Fall semester courses, and December 1st for Winter semester courses. Check with the current chair to confirm the deadline and to inquire about any flexibility (we recommend you ask for it, if needed, since the awarding of teaching fellowship contracts put you on a tight deadline!).
As of Fall 2020, instructors submit an email explaining how their course addresses the most recent Program Learning Outcome (#4) of our BA programs:
Recognize the impact of historical and ongoing oppression and resistance in literary, cultural, and educational institutions, and engage actively in projects and conversations that challenge oppression and foster transformative change toward more just, diverse and equitable universities, communities and worlds
This statement can include a note on the diversity of your reading list, a description of course policies that foster inclusive learning spaces, and so on. This procedure should be explained and invited by the Chair and/or the anti-racist teaching practice working group ahead of syllabus submission.
Also as of Fall 2020, instructors must include a discussion of how the course addresses PLO 4 with TAs or graders in the opening Hours of Work meeting.
ES: Syllabi can be adjusted throughout the semester; however, if you also regard the syllabus as a contract between the instructor and student, then it is imperative that you notify your students that the syllabus is being changed, and ensure they have easy access to the new syllabus.
