11 Required elements and policies

What elements of a syllabus are required?

ES: Syllabi must include the following sections and information:

  • Instructor information (name, email, office hours)
  • Course description
  • Grading scheme
  • Accessibility statement
  • Assignment descriptions
  • Policy on missed work, extensions, and late penalties
  • Class schedule

EG: I don’t think it’s officially required, but many instructors include the essay grading criteria found in the first-year ECS handbook. I frequently direct students and TAs to this during grading.
