4 Drafting learning outcomes
How did you approach/draft your courses’ intended learning outcomes?
ES: Considering that the ENG 2PC3 course is run in the English department, I wanted to ensure students knew that there would be a lot of writing in this course, and so the learning goals included developing writing and communication skills, but also developing critical thinking and analytical skills that are inherent to English and Cultural Studies.
EG: Initially, I used my “amalgam” document, as well as the department’s recently redeveloped PLOs (Program Learning Objectives), in combination with my own particular aims for the course. I then tried to group those aims and scale them down into clear, manageable outcomes, with a focus on goals that would build across the course.
Going forward, I think I would try to simplify these learning outcomes to make them more approachable for students. I’d also place a greater emphasis on writing, which I think suffered a bit.
