9 Course structure in remote teaching
What approach did you take to your remote course structure? What would you change for another remote teaching session? What elements of that remote syllabus would you keep for post-pandemic teaching?
ES: I opted for asynchronous lectures that were pre-recorded in the form of video essays, as well as synchronous drop-in group consultations that were scheduled throughout the week. I outlines appropriate student conduct on Zoom, which I would keep since I could easily refer to it if a student was acting inappropriately. I would also keep my email policy. I would mix synchronous and asynchronous lectures in the future, as one of the requests the student had in course evaluations was more of a sense of community.
EG: I ran synchronous Zoom lectures, but made attendance optional and all recordings/transcripts available. Tutorials were all synchronous. In future, I too would also aim for more of a mix, likely keeping the lecture set-up but switching to an asynchronous tutorial option (e.g.: forums, reflection submissions) with occasional synchronous tutorial workshops tied to assignments. Going forward I’ll continue offering multiple formats of lecture supports (e.g.: slides, lecture notes, etc.); I’d also consider keeping a remotely consumable lecture (e.g.: a podcast) in the schedule.
