1 How Is Year One Going?

Picture of me and favorite friends, preparing for the midterms.

The first semester of the first year is coming to an end . So far, it was hectic but I managed to get decent grades . Transitioning was not easy , but manageable with the help of my new great friends. My regret throughout this term , is setting an extremely broad goal;which is aiming for a GPA not less than 3.0/4.0. I believe this is a good start for a new level of  studies.

As I approach the second semester of my nursing program, I have set both long-term and short-term SMART goals to support my academic, professional, and personal development. These goals are crafted to ensure that I stay focused, organized, and motivated throughout the semester, laying a strong foundation for my nursing career.

Long-Term Goal: Achieve a Minimum 3.5/4.0 GPA and Improve Clinical Writing Skills

Specific: My long-term goal is to achieve a GPA of at least 3.5/4.0 by excelling in all my courses while simultaneously improving my clinical writing skills. The improvement in clinical writing will involve practicing accurate, concise, and thorough documentation during clinical rotations, seeking feedback from instructors and mentors, and incorporating that feedback into my practice.

Measarable: I will measure my progress by tracking grades for each class assignment and exam, ensuring my GPA stays on target. For clinical writing, I will review instructor feedback after every clinical session, identify areas of improvement, and document my progress in a self-reflection journal.

Achievable: This goal is realistic as I am committed to consistent study habits, active participation in class and clinical settings, and seeking additional support through workshops or guidance from peers and faculty when needed. I will also dedicate time each week to practicing clinical documentation, reviewing case studies, and improving my understanding of professional writing standards.

Relevant: Excelling academically and mastering clinical writing are crucial for my nursing career. Achieving these objectives will enhance my confidence in delivering safe, effective, and professional care while meeting the high standards expected in the nursing field.

Time-bound: This goal will be accomplished by the end of the semester, with regular progress reviews after each exam, clinical assignment, and grading period. Specific checkpoints include the midterm and final evaluations in my courses and clinical rotations.

Short-Term Goal: Establish a Consistent Study Schedule and Maintain Strong Motivation

Specific: My short-term goal is to create a detailed and structured study schedule within the first week of the semester. This schedule will allocate specific times for lectures, reading assignments, practice exercises, review sessions, and self-care activities. Additionally, I aim to start the semester with strong motivation by understanding the requirements of each course early and preparing myself mentally and physically for success.

Measurable: I will measure this goal by successfully following the study schedule every week and assessing my understanding of the material through weekly quizzes, self-assessments, or group discussions. I will also track the time spent studying and the areas covered to ensure consistent and effective progress.

Achievable: This goal is achievable with careful planning and discipline. I will use digital tools like calendars and study apps to manage my time effectively. To stay motivated, I will set small, achievable milestones, reward myself for meeting them, and reflect on my long-term career goals to maintain focus.

Relevant: Establishing strong study habits and maintaining motivation are foundational for a successful semester. A structured approach will help me manage the heavy workload, reduce stress, and ensure I understand and retain the material, which is essential for academic and clinical success.

Time-bound: I will have the study schedule finalized and in use within the first week of the semester. Weekly reviews will help me adjust the schedule as needed, ensuring it remains realistic and effective throughout the semester.

By setting these SMART goals, I am committed to excelling academically and growing professionally in the second semester. The long-term goal of achieving a strong GPA and improving clinical writing will directly enhance my competence as a nursing student, while the short-term goal of creating and adhering to a study schedule will provide the structure and motivation needed to succeed. With determination, careful planning, and consistent effort, I am confident in my ability to achieve these goals and build a strong foundation for my nursing career.
