Course Notes

You are responsible for your own learning throughout the online lessons and in-class activities, and to explore beyond these engagements. This means that is it not necessary to recall, remember, or retain all the information presented. Take notes about what piques your interest and curiosity so that you can engage with the material further. PowerPoint slides will be posted on Brightspace alongside the modules.

Hardware (basic requirements for online components)

Students will complete a large part of this course online via weekly modules. Thus, you will require the use of a personal computer with a reliable internet connection. A mobile device or tablet are not sufficient options for engagement in this course. For optimal engagement in class, it’s recommended to bring a laptop.

If you find you do not have access to these requirements, please email Lindsay.

Course Web Site

All information pertaining to this course will be available on the course’s Brightspace webpage, which will become active December 23, 2024 to give students an opportunity to peruse the course. Students are not required to engage with the course before the first day of the Winter term: January 6, 2024.

Collaborative Indigenous Learning Bundles

Part of citizen scholarship is to appreciate that there is diversity in ways in which we come to know things. This is one of the many reasons it is important to expose ourselves to ways of knowing that exist outside of traditional Western and colonial structures. In this course, many of us will have the fortune to learn on unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin nation. There are many ways in which we can demonstrate understanding of this truth. One of which is to learn about Indigenous history in Canada. If you are learning from other territories, I would encourage you to explore and learn about the Indigenous history of those nations. A great place to start is an Indigenous-led website: Native Land Digital website.

In a concerted effort to integrate Indigenous knowledge into our course, two Bundles have been included and incorporated into our learning activities. Designed as a learning tool for students, Bundles make Indigenous ways of knowing available to the Carleton learning community without overburdening Indigenous experts. Because these Bundles have been provided by Indigenous experts, they provide the necessary factual and theoretical basis for understanding Indigenous ways of knowing, and you will be prompted to consider how this knowledge might be applied in Psychology. Please ensure that you complete the provided material on Brightspace in full to ensure that you follow the protocols, do not misappropriate Indigenous Knowledge, and experience the content and the knowledge in the way that the creators intended.

cuPortfolio

Students will use cuPortfolio to complete the Success Portfolio assignment to demonstrate their learning throughout the course. All students have access to cuPortfolio and can log in with their MyCarletonOne credentials. Students can get support via the following webpage: carleton.ca/cuportfoliosupport/help/.

Microsoft Word

The accepted format for most assignments in this course is Microsoft Word. Note that access to Microsoft 365 is included in students’ tuition. See ITS’s Get Microsoft Office for Students webpage for more information on accessing the software.
