Learning Activities: Understanding 2SLGBTQ+ Data

Comparing National and Community-Based Surveys

Part A. Observation

Look at the Trans PULSE Canada survey questions on sexual orientation and attraction. See survey here. Compare these with Statistics Canada’s standardized sexual orientation question used in the Census and other national surveys.

  • What differences do you notice in the categories and response options?

  • How might these differences affect who feels represented in each survey?

Part B. Reflection

  1. Which approach (Statistics Canada or Trans PULSE Canada) is more inclusive of diverse identities and experiences? Why?

  2. Why is it important for national surveys to maintain consistency and comparability across time, even if the categories are limited?

  3. What are the trade-offs between inclusivity and comparability in survey design?

Part C. Application to Social Work Practice

Imagine you are conducting a community needs assessment for a local 2SLGBTQ+ youth drop-in centre.

  • Which type of survey question (standardized national measures or community-informed measures) would you use? MIght you combine both? If so, why?

  • How might your choice shape the kinds of services that get funded or prioritized?

  • What ethical considerations should you keep in mind when asking about sexual orientation and attraction in a vulnerable community?
