Learning Activities: Strategies for Overcoming 2SLGBTQ+ Data Challenges

Survey Design Exercise

Individually or in groups:

• Design a short survey focusing on a specific underrepresented 2SLGBTQ+ subgroup (choose one, e.g., Two-Spirit, non-binary youth, etc.).

• Specify which of the strategies from Chapter 4 you will use to ensure the data is reliable, valid, inclusive, and ethically collected.

• Draft limitations section for research to address what you couldn’t capture and what is still missing.

For example:

• If sample size is small, discuss methdologies that can help overcome this, such as oversampling, pooling, snowball sampling.

• If categories are inconsistent across surveys then ensure your measures are clear. How would you document this in a codebook/userguide?

• If there are ethical issues:

  • Discuss building partnerships with community organizations and participants to build trust

  • How would you ensure participant confidentiality?

  • Would you consider methdologies which empowers participants such as participatory action research (PAR)?
