Learning Activities: Strategies for Overcoming 2SLGBTQ+ Data Challenges
Survey Design Exercise
Individually or in groups:
-
Design a short survey focusing on a specific underrepresented 2SLGBTQ+ subgroup (choose one, e.g., Two-Spirit, non-binary youth, etc.).
-
Specify which of the strategies from Chapter 4 you will use to ensure the data is reliable, valid, inclusive, and ethically collected.
- Draft limitations section for research to address what you couldn’t capture and what is still missing.
For example:
-
If sample size is small, discuss methdologies that can help overcome this, such as oversampling, pooling, snowball sampling.
-
If categories are inconsistent across surveys then ensure your measures are clear. How would you document this in a codebook/userguide?
-
If there are ethical issues:
-
Discuss building partnerships with community organizations and participants to build trust
-
How would you ensure participant confidentiality?
-
Would you consider methdologies which empowers participants such as participatory action research (PAR)?
