Module 6: Common Myths about Sexual Violence
Most of us hold false beliefs about sexual violence because our communities, institutions, and education systems have provided us with this information. Also, the media and pornography, often show relationships, sex, and consent in confusing and unrealistic ways. These false beliefs – myths – prevent people from intervening to stop sexual violence and prevent us from supporting survivors in all the ways they need and deserve.
Myths minimize the seriousness of sexual violence, distort the meaning of consent, and blame survivors, making it difficult for them to share their experience. One of the ways to prevent sexual violence and support survivors is to understand the facts.
