Editing

Editing each final shot to upload into your gaming platform is the final stage in the filming process. When possible, editing is another area that it is recommended to
invest in and hire a professional or trained student from an editing program. A professional or student is more familiar with various editing programs, tools, and techniques; for example with jump-cutting, transitions, and title cards. If you are unable to hire an editor due to the budget, there are other resources that can support you with the editing process.

Editing takes time. Schedule time after filming to focus on editing and to take your time with the process. After your first draft from the raw footage, take a break before going back to refine the final version.

In Exploring Movie Construction and Production by John Reich, Chapter 7: What is Editing discusses the editing process in more detail to help you strengthen your skills and find your own routine.

The final step in the editing process is to consider accessibility and universal design for learning (UDL) principles. Consider how to add closed captioning or transcripts for learners to access if needed.

Educator Tip

“The first virtual gaming simulation I filmed was the Meal Assistance Virtual Gaming Simulation. It was a massive learning curve and I loved every minute learning the new skills. One thing I wish I knew before filming was how to edit. There are various programs that require an understanding of intricate details specific to the program. However, what I did learn was that there are lots of experts in the field who love to support new people learning these skills. During the editing process, I reached out to our filming and editing department at Centennial College. I talked to many people in the department who were helping me to find the right person to answer my questions. Once we did, they invited me to meet them in person and walked me through the best program for the virtual simulation. They explained the program in a simplistic way to help me learn what I needed to do. Always remember not to be afraid to reach out and ask for help. There are plenty of people out there who are happy to help you succeed in your goals.”   ~ Michelle Hughes
