Introduction to Stereotype Threat

Let’s start by thinking a bit about ourselves and our own lives. Think about the following statement:

Reflect on how you described the computer you were thinking of. Does your description represent all computers, or were you giving the characteristics of a computer you were familiar with, such as your own?

This is a good example of how stereotypes can work. A stereotype can be an oversimplified, generalized, and sometimes inaccurate description of someone or something. Just as your description of a computer may not match all computers, stereotypes can be inaccurate in their portrayals of their subjects. Although in the case of a computer this is not likely to be harmful, there can be lasting harmful effects when stereotypes are applied to groups of people.

In this module, we are going to learn more about Stereotype Threat, and the role that it may play in your workplace.
