Conclusion
You have now learned how to understand and recognize stereotyping and bias that Indigenous employees may experience in the workplace. Stereotype threat can create a harmful environment for Indigenous employees, which can in turn lower morale and hinder success in the workplace. In order to begin to combat both explicit and implicit examples of stereotype threat in our workplaces, we need to understand what it may look like and learn how to recognize it – both in ourselves and others. By examining ourselves and the places that we work through an inclusive lens, we can begin to take the first steps to make our workplaces a more culturally safe place for Indigenous employees.
Learning Goals
At the end of this lesson, I have:
- Explained how stereotype threat can impact the psychological and emotional well-being of Indigenous employees.
- Demonstrated the ability to recognize and respond to instances of stereotype threat for Indigenous employees in a workplace scenario.
