Section One: The Fundamentals

A) Keywords

Exercise 1:

Provide a brief definition of one of the padlet keywords for this week.

Anti-aging Agenda:

This is the idea that embeds the fear of the natural process of ageing. It creates shame and the fear of getting older and by this a lot of companies are able to sell their anti-aging products which can make its way into the market like anti-wrinkle cream, botox injections to prevent signs of aging and has grown into one of the biggest markets worth billions of dollars. Products like these ensure that women stay youthful. This plays a part in sport where it is suggested for elders to stay active and by doing this they are choosing a natural alternative rather than beauty products. Still as Pike suggests by pushing elders to stay active prevents elders from becoming a burden on society, therefore, although these options may carry some form of benefit as women would prefer to look young and feel beautiful these are still ways of creating social control within society that do not always serve with genuine solutions.

B) The Social Significance of Aging in Sport

Exercise 2: Notebook Prompt

How is old age popularly represented today? Find an image online that you think exemplifies one defining attitude towards old age and paste in your notebook below with a brief explanation of what this image means to you.

I chose this picture of two elders working in the garden as this represents how gardening is perceived as an elderly activity, but it can be seen as much more than that as gardening conveys many beneficial outcomes for them as it helps elders find joy in the little things, by being outside in the sun as it also offers low-impact movement and another alternative to staying active which can reduce arthritis. This also benefits their mental heath by giving them the independence to do something on their own without having to feel like they need the assistance by others which helps them feel like they do and accomplish things on their own which can be a quite challenging factors as you get older that it is perceived that as you age you need the help in order to do things. Gardening is one of those things that elders can archive on their own and gain a sense of fulfillment.

Exercise 3: Notebook Prompt

What does the article (referencing another study by Dionigi) mean by its statement that sport can help aging people to simultaneously “accept and resist the ageing process” (572)? Respond by audio or text and find paste two images sourced online into your notebook showing how sport might help aging people to both accept and resist the aging process.

What is meant by the statement sport can help aging people to simultaneously “accept and resist the aging process” this means that although elders may face the effects of aging it doesn’t mean that they are incapable of engaging in sport or activities that serve to benefit them. Although they may face some motor decline they are still able to take part in activities that can offer them a sense of well-being as aging does not make them unable to participate in sport nor does not limit their ability to still be able to be active. This pushes against the social expectation that elders are too delicate and brittle but shows they are still capable of being active which helps them naturally stay youthful as it makes them feel good about themselves, feel fit and get their bodies moving instead of just being viewed as couch potatoes which is a common ageist stereotype.

Exercise 4: Notebook Prompt

Who are the groups less likely to have extensive opportunities to take part in sports, according to Pike? How does privilege factor into aging and sport? (200 words max)

The two main groups that Pike highlights as being less likely to have extensive opportunities to take part in sports are elders and those who are physically disabled. Pike states that these two groups are too weak and physically unable to participate. When it comes to have privilege being a factor into aging and sport those who come from wealth are able to afford personalized programs such as personal training, or have a membership at a private club make it easier and more accessible for them to partake in activities allowing them to have the opportunity to be and stay healthier. As when we look at those are not as fortunate they are unable to seek such opportunities which limits them the option to access fitness owing to lack of financial stability as many receive disability payments which is just enough to pay their bills. Those who are in wheelchairs for example need special care and would need a personal trainer to help them but not everyone has that opportunity to afford one on one personal training therefore limiting those from a healthy lifestyle.

Exercise 5: Padlet Discussion

Why do you think age discrimination is “reported more than any form of prejudice” with older people presented as a threat to social values and interests? Feel welcome to use video in your responses. Paste your comments (or transcript of your video) below!

Ageism serves immense prejudice as elders are seen as a burden upon society that they require more help, resources and accommodation within their daily lives. Although this holds some truth they should not be seen as a burden as they have contributed a lot to society in their younger years much more than youth nowadays have contributed in today’s society instead they face discrimination from society and shamed for being elderly.

B) Older Women and Sport

Exercise 6: Notebook Prompt

What differences do you see in these ads? Which one is more inclusive? How is age represented or not represented in each?  Answer these questions in your notebook.

After watching both ads the Nike one in particular we see how it advocates for disability inclusion and unity. Although it shows a very positive message that no matter what disability you have you are still capable of competing in sports and performing at similar levels as athletes that do not identify with a physical disability, it sends the message that although they might have a disability it does not stop them from performing at high levels. The only thing I noticed throughout the entire ad was that all the athletes were young, all between the ages of 20-40 years of age and lacked to include those who above the age of 50. This conveyed the exclusion of this age group indicating that maybe someone who is above the age of 50 is unable to perform at such intensity because they as seen as not as physically inclined which shows discrimination of this age group.

Evaluating the second ad we see how women push against the pains of be a women and that no matter what women are seen as unstoppable which being a women myself I can relate to this. It sends the message of women empowerment that no matter what having kids, experiencing the the natural pains of a women that it does not stop you from pushing through the challenges that life brings but to push through and to be motivated by moving your body and choosing to stay and be healthy because women can have and do it all.

Exercise 7: Notebook Prompt

In her article, “Assessing the sociology of sport: On age and ability,” Elizabeth Pike references a “trend towards a ‘feminisation of ageing’, with many women living longer than men” (573).  Do you agree that aging has been “feminized” in this way? How?  Answer these questions in your notebook.

Yes, I can agree that aging has been feminized I think it has been a societal expectation for women to in fact live longer than men because they are seen as the primary caregiver. Even myself for example if I think about this, I lean toward my mother more than I do for my father and I always tell my mom to take care of herself and to eat and stay active so that she stays healthy. Through this lens I can see how Pike references a trend toward a ‘feminism of ageing’ as women in general are seen as the one to be depended on, women offer that nature nurturing sense of comfort.

I also seen this in other aspects such as certain products being feminized such as botox products and anti-aging creams that offer women the opportunity to look younger and with all the advertisements I can agree that it works to get women on wanted to buy and use the creams and also get botox treatments. I think society has made women believe that in order for them to be beautiful it requires them to look younger instead of them embracing their natural aging process.

Section Three: Module Mini Assignment

“The Great Peterborough Pickleball Debacle” Case Study
Using the Pike article in Section One as a reference, analyze popular depictions/discussions/critiques of pickleball as a “sport trend” that has proved enormously appealing to older segments of the population.
1) Describe the problem as you understand it. Read this article for background and source two  other media /social media pieces.
2) Leaving aside the clear issues with process and priorities, consider how the older pickleball athletes/advocates are represented in the media/social media discussions of the issue. Is ageism a factor in these representations? Where do you see a neoliberal agenda around aging at work in these stories (provide examples and refer back to the Pike article for guidance). Include any images you think may be relevant?  (300 words)
Worth: 5%
