Indigenous Education at Centennial College

Centennial recognizes the essential role that the College has in reconciliation with our Indigenous peoples. Our Indigenous Strategic Framework has five overarching pillars:

  1. Indigenous Nations and Communities,
  2. Equitable Access Opportunities,
  3. Indigenous Learning and Development for All,
  4. Indigenous Spaces, and
  5. Student Services and Experiences.

The Indigenous Knowledges: First Peoples in Canada program is a four-course program that allows you to explore First Peoples’ current issues, community, relationships, self-governance, and sovereignty within Canada. Material is presented through oral traditions, stories, art, music, dance, and symbolism. You may use the General Education elective courses required for your program to satisfy the requirements of this Centennial College Certificate, allowing you to earn an extra credential. This credential will diversify your education, building on your program’s practices and employability.

You may also want to review the resources compiled in the Libraries’ Indigenous Knowledges Library Guide.

If the College knows you are of Indigenous identity or ancestry, relevant information may be sent directly to you. This may include information about specific Indigenous bursaries or other financial assistance, notice of cultural events, referrals to support services, access to cultural and lounge space for Indigenous students, and invitations to participate in a variety of relevant activities. In order to build community and appropriately plan and deliver programs, services, supports, and opportunities that are relevant to Indigenous students, we need to know how many Indigenous students are applying to or enrolled at the College. This information also helps us measure the success of our efforts. For more information on self-identification and how to do so please see the Indigenous Student Self-Identification FAQs.
