2.1 What Is Compassion Fatigue?

Compassion fatigue resulting from persistent demands of time and effort, continuous exposure to the trauma of others, without replenishing one’s own energy stores, leads to a reduction in capacity to care for others in the typical manner (CAMH, n.d.). Compassion fatigue, usually seen as critical incident stress or vicarious trauma, is regarded as a crucial worry for experts in caregiving professions, especially individuals whose job is with some of the most marginalized groups; for instance, those who find themselves enduring homelessness. It is typified by physical, spiritual, and emotional draining due to constant subjection to the pain of others (Patole et al., 2024). This OER aspires to supply educational resources and mechanisms to assist experts, recognize, manage and alleviate compassion fatigue.
