Homelessness is a complex social issue, often blended with systemic disadvantage, personal trauma, and societal stigmatization. Individuals experiencing homelessness are faced with an array of challenges, the most prevalent being the stigma associated with their situation. Stigmatization of Individuals experiencing homelessness can create social isolation, discrimination, and limited access to resources, making it more difficult for individuals to transition out of homelessness. As stipulated by what has been stated by professionals working with this population, the stigma faced by Individuals experiencing homelessness is pretty much based on myths that are heavily entrenched in societal biases.

The stigma surrounding homelessness is not just an individual issue for the victim but is also a barrier to discussing the social causes of homelessness. Most of the public perceives homelessness because of personal failures such as lack of responsibility or laziness, without considering the structural causes of unaffordability of houses, income inequality, and weak social welfare systems that are largely to blame for perpetuating homelessness. Moreover, Individuals experiencing homelessness are disproportionately linked with addiction and mental illness, providing another dimension to their marginalization and shutting more doors on potential recovery and rehabilitation into society.

This project scrutinizes the stigmatization of those individuals affected by homelessness and critically investigates the ways in which these attitudes shape public policy, social attitudes, and the personal experiences of those affected. Through consideration of the work of professionals who have had a long experience working with people affected by homelessness, this paper aims to review the implications of stigma and suggest methods of creating a more understanding, empathetic and compassionate environment for people affected by homelessness.
