Addiction and mental health issues are growing concerns among post-secondary students in Canada, often contributing to significant challenges such as academic struggles, social isolation, and even homelessness. The transition to post-secondary education is a critical period where young adults face numerous stressors, including academic pressure, financial difficulties, and social changes, which can exacerbate underlying mental health conditions and lead to substance use as a coping mechanism (Smith, Hawke, Chaim, & Henderson, 2017).

The intersection of addiction and mental health concerns with housing instability has become increasingly prevalent, making it crucial to explore the underlying causes and potential interventions. This chapter will investigate the causes of addiction and mental health disorders among post-secondary students, highlighting the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors that contribute to these issues. Furthermore, we will examine the risk factors associated with substance use and mental illness, such as peer pressure, academic stress, financial instability, and lack of access to adequate mental health services. The paper will also explore the effects of these challenges on students, particularly their academic performance, social relationships, and overall well-being.

Additionally, this chapter will discuss various strategies and solutions aimed at addressing addiction and mental health concerns in post-secondary institutions. These include campus-based mental health programs, harm reduction initiatives, policy interventions, and community support systems designed to prevent and mitigate the adverse effects of addiction and mental illness. By providing a comprehensive understanding of these issues, this paper highlights actionable steps that institutions and policymakers can take to create a more supportive student environment. Addressing addiction and mental health concerns in post-secondary students is essential for ensuring their academic success, personal development, and long-term well-being.
