Read time: 1 minute
Overview
This chapter talks about why equity, diversity and inclusion matters in STEM fields .
- As STEM fields rely on knowledge creation, incorporating diverse experiences widens the spectrum of ideas and insights. In his book, “The Difference”, Professor Scott Page mentions that this ability to see the problem differently is often the key to breakthrough discoveries.
- Building a diverse team begins with creating an inclusive environment. Inclusion allows us to bring together people with different perspectives, strengths and backgrounds who complement each other, thereby leading to increased creativity, productivity, engagement, and innovation.
- According to a study published in PNAS, an inclusive team is more likely to ask different questions, approach the problems differently, and develop more innovative solutions. By fostering inclusivity, teams increase their likelihood of scientific success.
- Organizations need diverse teams to be relevant and by leveraging the differences that come with diversity organizations can gain a competitive advantage in terms of long-term economic growth.
- In terms of hiring, incorporating EDI increases the talent pool significantly and diverse hiring practices are likely to attract more talent.
- Working in diverse teams allows team members to critically review their work, thinking of alternate ideas and solutions before presenting their results. Diversity is the key to harnessing the full potential in STEM.
Funding organizations such as NSERC have policies in place to account for EDI while reviewing grant applications. More information can be found here.
