2 Beliefs and Values
Every nurse should hold their beliefs and values strong, I believe this makes every nurse original and true to themself.
My Belief Statement
As a registered practical nurse and nursing student, I believe that the roots of nursing are compassion, accountability, equality, and empathy. These qualities make me the nurse I am today and guide my nursing career in this transition from a registered practical nurse to a registered nurse.
My Nursing values
When I think of my core values, I always start by asking myself, “If it were my loved ones, how would I wish for them to be treated?.” And to answer that, the values that come to mind are compassion, equality, empathy, and accountability.
compassion
Compassion is a fundamental aspect of nursing. It represents the purposeful effort to alleviate suffering while providing comfort and hope for patients. It is demonstrated through kindness, patience, dignity, respect, and concern for the well-being of our patients. Without compassion, the nurse-client relationship would look incredibly different. Compassion extends to the relationships within the healthcare team, promoting support and resilience within each team member. This value emphasizes the importance of the quality of care provided and reminds us of the immense impact nursing care can have on the lives of those around us.
Accountability
Accountability serves as a professional and honest guide for nursing practice. It emphasizes ownership of decisions, actions, and outcomes. It reflects a commitment to providing safe, ethical, and competent care while maintaining integrity and reliability. Accountability facilitates trust among patients and their family members, the healthcare team, and the community. This value allows nurses to embrace feedback, adapt, evolve in the healthcare setting, and pursue education, which ensures that accountability remains at the forefront of nursing practice.
equality
Equality emphasizes the need for fairness and justice in every aspect of healthcare. It means treating patients fairly regardless of their socio-economical status, cultural background, personal circumstances, opinions, pasts, and lifestyle behaviours. Equality means creating an environment where every patient feels included, valued, and respected in their care. This value extends to addressing systemic inequities that impact health outcomes and empowering patients and nurses to achieve their optimum. Providing care with fairness and attentiveness reinforces the commitment to health equality in all aspects of nursing care.
EmpathyEmpathy allows for meaningful connections that are built around trust and understanding between the nurse and the patient. It involves recognizing and addressing the lived experiences, emotions, and perspectives of others when formulating approaches to patient care. This value enhances relationships in the healthcare team, supporting collaboration and teamwork. Empathy ensures that every patient is recognized and not treated as a clinical task and number, and their emotional and psychological needs are met while in the therapeutic environment.
