Background
The creation of this edited book is founded upon the principles of openness and sustainability.
What does ‘open’ mean?
In his paper titled Models for Sustainable Open Education Resources, Ed Walker (2005, page 3), defined ‘open’ as content that is “convenient, effective, affordable, and sustainable and available to every learner and teacher worldwide”. Given that open education (OE) promotes the creation and adoption of open education resources (OERs), my goal as an OER Creator is to meet these objectives.
What does sustainable mean?
More specifically, one element of successful open education practices is the concept of sustainability. In their paper titled What Makes an Open Education Program Sustainable? The Case of Connexions, Uptal Dholakia, Joseph King and Richard Baraniuk (2006, page 3) define sustainability as “the long-term viability and stability of [an] open education program”.
