31 Word Race

Level Material
B1 and up Cards with words/expressions you want to review

Write the words/expressions you want to review on cards (one word or expression on each card). As students will play in groups, prepare one set for each group. Shuffle each set (so that all sets have the same words, but each set has the words in a different order) and place each set in a pile facing down on your table.

Place students in groups. Assign a different set to each group. A member of each group runs to the table and takes two cards from the top of the pile assigned to their group.

They race back to their groups and try to make a sentence using both words. As soon as they have a sentence, they run back to you and say the sentence. If you accept it, they take two new cards. If you don’t accept it, they rush back to the group and fix it or create a new one.

The group that finishes their pile of cards first, wins the game.

Note: If students say the sentences to you, you may wish to focus on meaning rather than the accuracy of the sentence. You may also have the groups write the sentences either on strips of paper or on the board. In that case, you may point out the grammar mistakes and ask them to fix the sentence before they take another pair of cards.
