PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The following beliefs and assumptions direct the Perioperative Nursing Program. It is
from these statements that the curriculum evolves and the specific requirements of the
program are established.
The perioperative nursing program:
1. Is grounded by the Operating Room Nurses Association of Canada (ORNAC)
‘Standards, Guidelines, and Position Statements for Perioperative Registered
Nursing Practice’ and CNO Standards of Nursing Practice
2. Is theoretically sound, technologically based and educationally innovative
3. Is committed to helping the student develop critical thinking skills required for the
provision of individualized client-centered care
4. Curriculum development is supported by theoretical knowledge, ethical and legal
principles, research, specialized clinical skills and caring practice
5. Reflects societal and technological changes and advances Interprofessional collaboration is an essential component of perioperative nursing education
6. Use of clinical simulation is a fundamental element of perioperative nursing
education
Teaching/Learning:
1. The teachers will use a variety of learning methodologies and resources
2. Principles of adult learning will be reflected in all teaching and learning
methodologies to increase your knowledge, and essential employability skills.
3. The theory component is delivered fully online. Labs are held on site at morningside campus and clinical onsite on a full-time basis Monday to Friday from 7:30-3:30
Luminate
All courses at Centennial have an online learning environment on Luminate, the College’s learning management system. Through Luminate you can access course documentation and class assignments, monitor grades, and actively communicate and collaborate with professors and other students. Online courses and online components of hybrid courses will be delivered through Luminate. You may need to write online tests and submit assignments via Luminate.
