Experiential Learning “supports students in gaining hands-on learning that helps them transition to employment”[1]. Experiential Learning can take the form of co-operative education, degree work placement, clinical/field placement, fieldwork/simulation labs, capstone/applied research projects, and service learning.
Clinical Placement
See Student Placement Requirements Handbook for details related to Clinical & Lab Field Placement Requirements.
Students missing any part of this documentation will NOT attend clinical practice.
Students, who have a ‘positive’ police record check, may be denied placement by the agency and will therefore, not be able to complete the fieldwork placement. Successful completion of all clinical placements is a requirement for promotion and graduation.
All clinical placement student requests are to go to the Program coordinator. Students do not arrange their own clinical placement. Students must be within a student role throughout the clinical component of the program, i.e., students may not count hours they are working for the agency as Perioperative clinical placement hours. If you have questions regarding this, please email your coordinator.
Attendance and performance are the key elements to success in clinical placements and all efforts will be made to support your learning in the facility in which it has been arranged.
All absences must be reported, as soon as possible, first to the clinical facility/most responsible person (OR charge RN/OR educator/OR manager) and then the clinical faculty.
Missed clinical placement days must be remediated within the semester that the absences occurred. Remediation can only be achieved by completing time in the clinical setting, which must be arranged by the student and clinical faculty.
Students are expected to consider their attendance at clinical placements in the same manner that they would a job. A clinical placement faculty who notes a repeated pattern of absenteeism, tardiness or poor professionalism will refer the student to the program coordinator.
Student clinical experiences are evaluated and a failure to meet minimum standards will result in course failure.
Students are expected to be wear OR scrub suits supplied by the clinical placement organization. Comfortable, closed-toe footwear is required. ORNAC standards must be followed with regards to OR attire including jewelry, nails, and personal protective equipment.
Avoid using perfumes, aftershave and other scented products as many people have allergies and sensitivities to these products.
Each student will bring the following items to the clinical setting:
- A means of keeping track of time
- Items for note taking
- RN Clinical Practicum Manual
- Centennial College photo-identification, to be worn at all times.
To successfully complete NP 403 (practicum) according to set criteria as outlined
in the practicum evaluation package; the learner must demonstrate the following
and achieve a ‘P’ passing grade:
- Completion of 240 clinical hours.
- Documentation of scrubbing experiences.
- An ability to function in the scrub nurse role at a developed/minimal guidance level.
- An ability to function in the circulating role at a developed/minimal guidance level.
- Completion of the learning outcomes.
- The ability to present clear, scholarly reflections on selected relevant practice issues using the LEARN format. Students must submit three reflections before the mid-term and two after the midterm. Any one reflection may be re-written once only. Students must receive a ‘Satisfactory” grading for 5 of 6 Reflections.
Note: Learners who do not consistently apply aseptic technique, the ORNAC and CNO standards and safe nursing practice, will not be able to continue in the clinical area and will not be successful in the program.
