Course Assessments

All credit courses have a formal method of evaluation and assessment. Your course outlines will communicate the evaluation scheme for each course, identifying assessment methods (assignments, projects, tests, etc.) that contribute to the final grade. Assessments are designed to evaluate the level at which you demonstrate the established course learning outcomes.

Policies for Evaluation and Grading and Promotion in the RN Perioperative Nursing Program

  1. An overall “B+” grade (75%) is required for satisfactory completion of NP 411 (Theory)
  2. NP 412 (Lab) is graded as a pass/fail. The final grade will be determined by the following:
  • Attendance and punctuality in the lab setting
  • Appropriate OR attire in the lab setting
  • Satisfactory return demonstration of all laboratory skills according to the evaluation criteria outlined in the evaluation forms

Note: Students will not be eligible for clinical placement if a consistent lapse in sterile technique is demonstrated

  1. To successfully complete the practicum according to set criteria as outlined in the practicum evaluation package; the learner must demonstrate the following and achieve a ‘P’ passing grade:
  • Completion of 240 clinical hours.
  • Documentation of both circulating and scrubbing experiences.
  • An ability to function in the scrub nurse role with minimal guidance in familiar situations
  • An ability to function in the circulating role with periodic to minimal guidance in familiar situations
  • Completion of the learning outcomes.
  • The ability to present clear, scholarly reflections on selected relevant practice issues using the LEARN format. Students must submit three reflections before the mid-term and three after the midterm. Any one reflection may be re-written once only. Students must receive a ‘Satisfactory” grading for 5 of 6 Reflections.

Note:  Learners who do not consistently apply aseptic technique, the ORNAC and CNO standards and safe nursing practice, will not be able to continue in the clinical area and will not be successful in the program.

Grading Scheme

The standard grading scheme for most courses is a letter grade ranging from A to F with each letter representing the equivalent percentage grade achieved in the course. Some courses have a Pass/Fail grading scheme. For these courses, a Pass does not impact your GPA but a Fail will. There are also other special grades that can be used for specific purposes.

NP 412 – RN Perioperative labs are graded as Pass/Fail

NP 403 – RN Practicum is graded as Pass/Fail

Grading Scheme
Letter Grade Grade Description Numerical Equivalent Grade Point
A+ Outstanding 90-100% 4.5
A Excellent 80-89% 4.0
B+ Very good 75-79% 3.5
B Good 70-74% 3.0
C+ Satisfactory 65-69% 2.5
C Satisfactory 60-64% 2.0
D+ Minimal* 55-59% 1.5
D* Minimal* 50-54% 1.0
F Failure** 0-49% 0
FNA Failure non-attendance
P Pass**
I Incomplete
AEG Aegrotat standing
AUD Audit status
CIP Course in progress
TCR Transfer credit
NGR No grade required
*In courses in some programs, these grades may not be considered a passing grade, and a higher passing grade may be required. The minimum required GPA for graduation is 2.0 and may be higher for some programs.

**May be used in a course where a percentage grade is inappropriate.

NP 411 requires a passing grade of 75% (3.5 grade point)

Accommodations

Centennial is committed to providing the best possible education for all of our students. This includes meeting the needs of students who may require adjustments or accommodations to equalize their opportunities to meet the essential requirements of achieving the learning outcomes in a course or program.

Assignments

Please refer to the policies outlined in the “Health Sciences Department Policies” of this manual.  Please note that in the RN Perioperative Nursing Program, the following will also apply:

If an extension on an assignment’s due date is not requested by the student prior to the date it is expected, or if the extension is denied, then the assignment must be completed by the specified date.  The penalty for submission of a late assignment is a deduction of 5% per day off of the grade earned on the assignment.

Missed Tests

Attendance is compulsory for all scheduled tests and examinations.

A student missing an evaluative method must contact the professor prior to the test/exam/assignment and clarify the reason for absence*. Failure to notify your teacher of your absence in advance will result in a grade of zero for that evaluative method.

*Written documentation is required to support claims of extenuating circumstances, i.e. illness or death of a family member.

At the teacher’s discretion, students arriving late for a test or exam, may not be admitted and, if admitted, may not be allowed additional time. However, students arriving after other students have exited the examination hall will not be allowed to take the test or exam.

Grade Appeals

You may appeal a grade received in a course only on one of the following grounds:
  • A clerical error has resulted in a miscalculation of the grade.
  • The grade awarded did not fairly reflect your academic performance and/or the stated requirements for the course.
Grade appeals cannot be based on a complaint that the nature and standard of evaluation was too onerous. i.e., you cannot claim that your professor marked too hard or that the assignment/test was too difficult. Follow the procedures for appeal in the Grade Appeals Policy and Procedures. Grade appeals must be made within ten (10) business days of the release of the grade.
