STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE NURSING LAB
1. Professionalism
We view our nurses’ lab identical to clinical agencies. Therefore, we expect
students to handle equipment and resources and behave in a professional and
respectful manner at all times when in the nurses’ lab. Further, a student may
not record or photograph any activities within the lab without prior authorization.
2. Personal belongings
Bring only textbooks and notes to the lab. There is no safe storage area for
personal belongings. Articles left on the floor are a safety hazard, and so it is a
requirement that students use lockers for coats, backpacks and other items that
are not needed in the lab class.
3. Food and beverages
Food and beverages are not permitted in the lab with the exception of the feeding
lab.
4. Lab security
Use the main entrance to enter and exit the lab. This limits access and increases
security.
5. Fire exit
It is the responsibility of the student to know fire exit locations.
6. Lab availability for practice
Check with the program coordinator for lab availability, there is minimal access during the weekday.
7. Noise Level
Try to keep the noise level in the lab to a minimum as distractions such as loud
conversations and banging of doors are disruptive to the learning of other
students.
8. Internet/Social Networking Policy
The Nursing program and Centennial College views social networking sites (e.g.
Facebook, Myspace, blogs, etc.) positively and respects the right of students to
use them as a medium of self-expression and to enhance academic learning.
However, if a student chooses to identify himself or herself as a Centennial
College student on such internet venues, students must adhere to nursing
standards such as professionalism, accountability, and self-regulation. Nursing
students must observe the following guidelines when referring to the RN program
and/or Centennial College in a blog, Website, or other social networking sites.

1. Students must be respectful in all communications and blogs related to or
referencing Centennial College, the Nursing program, employees, students,
and other College personnel.
2. Student must not use obscenities, profanity, or vulgar language.
3. Students must not use blogs or personal Website to disparage the College
and/or RN program, employees, students, and other College personnel.
4. Students must not use blogs or personal Website to harass, buy, or intimidate
other students, employees, students, and other College personnel.

5. The use of Centennial College logo, ID badge, or other identifiers must not be
used within social media networking sites.
6. Photographs of Centennial College, the Nursing program, equipment,
students, employees, students, and other College personnel may not be
distributed on any social media networking site.

Behaviors that constitute harassment and bullying are listed in Centennial
College’s Harassment and Discrimination Prevention Policy.

Perioperative Specific Lab Guidelines:

Attire
The mandatory attire for participation in lab includes OR scrub suits or a short sleeved
nursing pantsuit and comfortable closed toed footwear. ORNAC standards will be
followed as they pertain to OR attire.

Attendance
Students will have the opportunity to practice a range of clinical skills and competencies
in labs. Learning objectives achieved in labs are critical to student preparation for
clinical placements and success upon graduation. As such, attendance at labs is
mandatory.
Developing professional behaviors (including regular attendance and punctuality) is an
integral part of student preparation for graduation. To demonstrate this, students will be
asked to sign-in at the start of each lab. Following this, any late arrivals will be regarded
as an absence. If the student acquires two absences, a written warning regarding
his/her conduct will be issued and a meeting with the professor will be arranged. An
additional absence (3 in total) will result in a meeting with the program coordinator to
review strategies for demonstrating proficiency with established competencies.
Continued lateness/absence (4 or more incidences) will result in meeting with the
program Chair and involve a formal review of the student’s need to repeat the lab course
prior to going on placement
If the student is absent due to an illness, then he/she will need to produce a doctor’s
note upon his/her return to the lab. In all instances, the student is responsible for
catching up on the learning objectives and perioperative skills covered in the lab(s)
missed.

There may be limited access to Centennial’s computers and specialty labs. For your health and safety, follow any posted protocols (e.g., physical distancing, cleaning, etc.).
