FIND THE PROBLEM
Where are the Problems?

The second step is to define the problem or problems the case presents. This involves identifying the central issue or issues that need to be addressed.
Look at the BIG picture and try to figure out what’s going on.
Start to analyze the case:
Ask:

- What’s happening here?
- Keep asking why? There’s rarely one root cause.
- What are the central issue(s), problems, and opportunities that need to be addressed?
Look For:

- Analyze the case data on causes, effects, constraints, and opportunities.
- Use case facts.
- Use evidence-informed leadership concepts, models, and tools.
- Use outside research sparingly.
Weigh Multiple options. There are many ways to solve an organizational problem.
You can focus your analysis by identifying the potential central issue or issues that need to be addressed:

- Identify 2-5 key problems and possible solutions – be a holistic thinker.
- Ask – Why do they exist?
- How do they impact the organization?
- Who is responsible for them?
